The Beijing Capital International Airport, called Shoudu and located 29 km north-east of Peking, is the main gateway hub for air companies of Asia, America and Europe. The very first airport of the Celestial Empire opened for commercial operations in 1958 and is nowadays one of the world’s busiest airports. The airport area is divided into 3 terminals. Owing to their cutting-edge infrastructure all terminals have the capacity to ultimately cater to the passengers’ needs.

The Terminal 1 covers 60.000 square meters and is fitted out with 16 gates .This Terminal which was extensively revamped in 2008 and became the operational base for domestic flights handled by all local air companies making part of HNA Group (Hainan Airlines, Grand China Air, Deer Air and Grand China Express Air).

Travelers who have to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 can make use of a public walkway situated on the same level. It takes less than half an hour to get from one terminal to the next. No passport control is required. Both domestic and international flights are operated at Terminal 2. This three-storey structure, which is nearly six times bigger than the area of Terminal 1, hosts diverse facilities ranging from luggage lockers to retail and food outlets.

The Terminal 3, where both domestic and international flights operate, was designed by the consortium NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants B.V.), UK architect Sir Norman Foster and the engineering company Arup. The project of this architectural Goliath was elaborated on the occasion of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The complex evoked by the traditional Chinese architecture comprises three major passenger terminals (Terminal 3 A, 3 B, 3 C) alongside two satellite concourses (Terminal 3 D and 3 E). The dragon-like form and the colors ranging from gradients of red to orange and gold make the Terminal 3 a museum-worthy attraction which upholds the highest aerodynamic standards. The Terminal is plenty of diverse vegetation levels. Thus, an opulent indoor garden is located in the waiting area of T 3 E. Besides, the tunnel which connects Terminal 3E and Terminal 3C is flanked by the plants inside so that passengers taking a speedy train to get from one zone to the other can enjoy a picturesque scenery while making a two minute trip.

The main international destinations operated at the Terminal 3 include Frankfurt, London, Paris, Washington, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto, Dubai, Sydney. With more than 1 million square meters covered, the infrastructure and the technical know-how are utterly state-of-the-art. The vast array of the on-site facilities seems infinite: Banks, business centers, internet shops, the area “Global Kitchen” with more than 70 bars and restaurants, baggage handling systems enabling to transport and sort more than 19000 pieces of luggage per hour. Arriving passengers are able to retrieve their baggage 4.5 minutes after this is unloaded from the aircraft.
